I've put some in this week. It is satisfying to make use of the ground that may otherwise lie fallow for the winter, with the added advantage of an earlier crop.

I have asked this question before. Has anyone had real success with growing in grow bags. My veg patch has onion white root rot, the growbag is the only hope I've got of getting any onions. Unless somebody out there has a better answer.

JackieJ, thank you for the kind offer but as I didn't want many (just want to experiment really) I have accepted Bride XIII's kind offer of a few each red and white.

never done them in growbags, have seen them done in large tubs though, the advantage of course is nice clean compost.

I've put some sets into two bags one in the greenhouse, one outside. I think that the soil may not be firm enough to grow decent onions. One thing for sure those outside don't need any watering, I may have to cover them.

We did both last year and got a fairly decent yield from the winter ones just when the stored summer ones were finishing up.

This year, I have one lot of winter ones being used up at the minute, and started into the spring reds and poor spring yellows. I have 12 strings of spring yellows (and I thinkg a couple of summer reds) in the shed for use over the winter. So that should see me through until the spring ones are ready next summer. So this year I am NOT planting autumn sown ones although I will be growing spring sown red and yellow ones again next year.

But I do plan on growing autumn sown next autumn - as I will probably need them earlier in 2010 (if I only plant 2 lots of sets for next year, they won't last as long as 3 lots of sets this year) and the spring sown ones won't be ready then. (And so one, every second year, is the general plan at the moment).
