  • tomatoes that are staying yellow/orange

i was given some tomato plants when they were dinky and now they are all grown up and have produced fruit, they have been on there for ages and i'm waiting for them to go red but they seem to be staing yellow or orange, is this how they are supposed to be?, as far as i know they are gardener's delight but can't be absolutely sure.

    help please!!!

Perhaps just try a small one for taste - it's quite possible you were given plants from one of the yellow/orange types.

Just bring them inside and set them somewhere on the kitchen counter to ripen (don't put them on the windowsil). That's what I've been doing with my cherry tomatoes, and they've all turned a nice red after a few days in the house near the fruit bowl. They say you can put them in a brown bag with a ripe banana, but you can get the same results just sitting them there where you can see and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

are you sure they aren't sungold or a type like that as they will only go to an orange colour.

I don't think you will poison anyone with a slightly under ripe tomato so don't worry. I grew a tomato this year called Orange Pixie - they turned to a bright orange when they were ripe. Not the best for taste though sadly.

Are they firm to the touch or do they 'give' a bit? If they are still hard then perhaps they will change colour again, if not hard then they are probably a yellow or orange variety and are ready to use.

(I grow tomatoes too though I can't eat them)

I've grown Gardener's Delight this year & mine are orange rather than red but they are ripe & taste perfectly normal.

Mine tasted fine orange, too. I gave up on ripening, what with the nasty weather and all! They were definitely Gardener's Delight. I also had trouble with the Tumbling Tom Thumbs ripening, but these also tasted fine.

thanks eveyone, i've tried the banana thing and they went from green or yellow to orange but no further change. i think i might have two types because some are dinky and go red but some are larger and they are the ones that seem to be staying orange
