I bought some small horseradish plants from Victoriana nursery earlier this year and they are still quite small. That is the leaves. Do the leaves have to be massive and plentiful before you dig the roots up. I'm just wondering whether I should leave them another year or not? The leaves are not jaggy edged like the horseradish I saw in Romania. I suppose there must be loads of different varieties!

I would be interested to know when i can did mine up too! I planted thongs in spring in deep buckets (to keep them contained) and they grew well but the leaves were badly eaten by catterpillars i think.
Should i leave the plants another year or dig one up to see how they're doing?
i can re-plant a bit of it can't I to keep it going???There's vegetable growing in the family, but I must be adopted

Horseradish is ready to harvest in autumn (from a spring planting), but its taste is more intense if you wait until after the first frost before eating.
To harvest: simply dig up the root which should be similar in size & shape to a parsnip. Leave a small section of root in the ground to grow into a new plant the following year. All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.
