This is what I do, but was curious as to why we don't plant strait into big pots to save the hastle of transplanting into bigger ones when the plants get to a larger size.

Depends on how much you water it.

Some plants benefit from re-potting at a lower level - this method is commonly employed with brassicas, for example.

Also, you end up wasting a lot of compost for any seeds which don't germinate and it all takes up a lot of space!

i managed to get about 20 trays in my boiler cupboard ....... couldn't get anywhere near that many pots ..... and it also saves buying pots
