  • Winter onions

    Hi all,

I put my winter onion sets in about Middle of sept they are doing great,But can anybody tell me do slugs like them,i found a few near to my raised veggie patch,so i pelted them with salt and slug pellets, also do i need to shlter the onions from strong winds as they are in a widely open space.

Mine were fine winter before last and the temp goes down waaaay below freezing very regularly. They don't particularly like waterlogged soil (nothing much does really!) but as long as the tops are too big they should stand through the winter just fine. Slugs don't seem to bother them much at all.

I planted out a bunch of onion seedlings a couple of weeks ago, just inspected them today and MOST have been eaten completely or at least munched down to a short stem only. Grrr. Have loads of spares so will replant ASAP but it's annoying - yes, slugs do seem to eat them, at least when small. Will put a beer trap near them and keep my fingers crossed for the next lot.

I get home in 12 days. Is it too late to put some winter onions in? Any suggestions for specific types gratefully received.

my over winter onions from last year did ok but didn't ripen much earlier than my summer ones and they didn't keep very well either. am i doing something wrong? haven't bothered with them for this year because of the above reasons.

Eh up...Are you putting this red onion back in the ground, letting it go to seed and using the seeds for future onions? It would be a nice way to continue your onions in your dad's memory.

                            Phew - just in time!

I've had a few sprout and they just go back into any old corner, and all give me lovely flowers, and more seed. I pop the seed [as suggested by Two_Sheds] straight into the ground, and little seedlings appear. They then get transplanted and go on to become another year's onions. Leave a few of those to go to seed the year after and so on.

well if it grows I will come back to you at the time to see what to do next, I don't suppose for one minute they are some special type of onion, he just bought sets each year, but it would be nice to try and keep his going.
