there couldn't ever be a definitive guide, as much is down to individual preferences, soil conditions, local weather etc etc.
All you can have is personal favourites, recommendations - and then try them for yourself. There are several threads on here of faves, and also some "avoids"

And of course new varieties are being introduced all the time, and old varieties becoming less available... besides which, isn't experimentation half the fun?! My heavenly haricots might be your bogeysome beans...
