i don't seem to have much success with my cauliflowers, they all seem to bolt very early or develop pink or brown patches on them. has anyone any ideas?

The ones they boiled for 3 hours for school dinners (to make sure they were really tender I assume!) were pinky-brown. I wonder if it's exposure to the sun? Some people snap over the outer leaves to protect the curd which is supposed to stop it discolouring.Whoever plants a garden believes in the future.

mine have done the same, and i snapped the leaves over
i've bought some self blanching caulis for next year, to see if they come out any better, i have eaten them pink/brown though, i cut the manky bits off, and they were still yum

Never looked for or even heard of self blanching cauli's Lynda! A lot of mine were brown/purple tinged even though I bent the leaves over them...................I think it was where slugs or snails had been crawling over the top of them nibbling them!
A good cheese sauce covers a multitude of sins though!

yeah slugs seem to like the top layer ...... i've never heard of them either, but after this years catastrophe i thought i'd give them a go
