Red Onions

[HotStuff]

I planted a whole load of 'Electric' red onions a few weeks ago and most of them now have green shoots several inches tall, however a few look like the picture below. It's probably a stupid question but does any one know if they're OK, or have I planted them upside down or what? All advice gratefully received.

Also, when I checked my raised beds this morning they seem to be covered with chunks of clear jelly, you can see a couple in the photo, it's not ice, it's definitely soft, any ideas?

Looks upside down to me. Sorry, if you turn them over, they should be ok.

Yup, those are the roots. Just turn them up the other way and blame the birds for playing tricks on you.

definitely upside down ..... good thing about seeds ........ they grow the right way up

the jelly stuff, have you used shop bought compost?? a lot of them have water crystals in, which makes clear jelly when wet.

Thank you all for being so kind. This is the first year I've grown anything so I've still got a lot to learn. Sure enough I eased them up carefully and they had white shoots growing at the other end. In fact, on closer inspection, one clever one had managed to push a shoot up despite being upside down. And I thought I'd been so careful when I planted them

@Lynda, yes it was compost from B&Q so that probably explains it, never knew that before.

Well... there was that time I planted a whole row of raspberries and completely covered up the entire lot with weed suppressant fabric, then proceeded to cut the canes down the way you are supposed to. After a little while it suddenly dawned on me that might have not been the most sensible thing in the world to have done

I did wonder about this when I was planting out snowdrops last weekend, as I started daydreaming and was just absent mindedly putting them in. Glad to know they'll survive regardless!!

Nah, whenever I make a mistake I just plead stupidity and strangely everone just accepts it

I would say you were just experimenting and trying to grow swan necked onions!
Probably less chance of getting basal rot that way anyway!
