Forage Pea Magnus

I managed to end up with an outdated packet of Forage Pea Magnus.

I know there out of date, but they were free so i was just looking into them on the internet but i am a bit lost!

I seem to have established that they cant be eaten by humans but they work very well as a natural organic green manure.

Now my question is first of all does anyone have any experience with these peas, and secondly would they add much value to my poor soil conditions if i plant them at the end of this season and left them over the winter to better my soil conditions......or should i bin them?!

I googled it.
It seems to be a green manure: Nitrogen fixing plant up to 1m tall, sow September to November for over-wintering. Can also be spring sown.
Sowing depth 7cm deep in rows 15-20cm apart

Most things don't grow much over winter and I would imagine winters can be pretty bad in the falklands. Think I'd be tempted to spring sow them as I personally have trouble overwintering peas at the best of times!

Well it seems we don't have much in the line of weather! I just checked Weather Underground and it our seasons are short and cold, like i never noticed before!!

I was checking out the pattern of Growth degree days and they are really sad looking compared to the UK.

With regard to the funny little pea then i think i will give it a go, and see if it helps my soil conditions. Were building 8 raised beds so i could try it in one for this year. What i was thinking was to grow it take of any seed pods (if at all any grow) then let it rot away and dig it over. Does that sound like a good idea?

Not familiar with peas as green manure, but usually a green manure is just that, i.e the green part is chopped down and dug in to add organic matter. Peas will of course add a wee bit of nitrogen from the fixated nodules on the roots.......probably just enough to rot down the green pea haulms! Lol
By all means give it a go but I would also try and get a hold of some manure as well!
