Where can I buy Oats to plant?

Hi everyone!

This is my first time posting here, and I hope I've done it in the right section.

I was looking at the seeds available on Great Vegetable Seeds from The Real Seed Catalogue and planning what I'm going to be growing next year when I came across the grains section on that website. I fell in love with the idea of trying growing some of my own oats, but unfortunately, they're not available this year!

So I was wondering, do any of you know where I might be able to get some similar seeds from?

Hmmm...you could try phoning your local farm suppiers ( there are loads around) and ask them. If they sell the huge bags, they may have one which has been ripped and are prepared to sell you part of it at discount.

Hmm Neil I think 35 tonnes may be just a little surplus to requirements! I only want a bit, it's really just a bit of an experiment to see if I can do it and how easy it is to do.

I've got the remains of a bag of mixed corn chook food which I sowed. Its about 3 inches high now and I'm not sure but I think it contains wheat,barley and maize! I'm only growing it for greenery for the chooks.
I was given a load of barley and I sowed that as well but nothing came. I think it had been malted as it was in a heap and got quite hot.

The mixed corn, along with all sorts of other seeds, some exotic, some not, can be bought loose at Jolleyes pet store for about £1.20 a kilo. Any petshop should sell a selection though!

Actually it's all going to be made in to oatibix in 2 weeks, following the other 220 tonnes of the stuff.

Seriously, can't see why you want to bother growing it anyway. In total we grow 80acres, It's very easy to grow with the right equipment, but i'd have thought you would be better planting edible crops the way food prices are going!

Go for it, it's always fun and highly educational to have a go at something different, even if it's just to see how it grows. I tried peanuts, only got 6 but good to eat and fascinating to watch the fruiting stem bury itself in the ground. Haven't tried oats yet but I thought I'd have a go at either amaranth or quinoa, might like it might not but it will be another plant tried!

Got some seeds from Jungleseeds.
No idea if its short grain or long grain or what (not until I open the packet anyway!) but I'm hoping to make an allotment risotto with it
