Storing in sand - damp or dry??

Hi,
We've pulled our carrots and beetroot up and boxed up in sand to store them over the next few months of usage. But the sand is slightly damp and I'm not sure if that's good or bad. After all, the soil they've just come out of is damp of course. But will the damp sand surrounding each "not actively growing" beetroot hasten rot or perhaps prevent the veg from drying out?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

The sand should be dry - and cool.

I just leave my carrots in the soil covered with enviromesh. I tried storing carrots in peat and sand and the sand ones shrivelled and the peat ones sprouted a beard of tiny roots all over.........no problems leaving them in the soil and I was harvesting up until April last year.
