Storm Damage (again)

No - that's ridiculous! I'm still having to check the furniture on the decking by the canal every time I go to the bathroom after it blew in last spring - that was a cold and wet experience I can tell you. It has bricks on it now to hold it down but I still worry. The wind blows straight down the canal as well, and it's so windy here at the moment.

I had to seal the post hole [letterbox?] last night as the wind was blowing straight at the house and the rain was pouring straight in...of course the OH who was in the front room didn't get up and DO anything - he just called 'Can I hear the rain coming in through the door' so I had to get up and find out what he was on about...men eh?

I have a plastic greenhouse with four shelves and it has been blown down before. Just a thought well question really could one be put it in a garage or cellar or somewhere it doesnt get the wind.

It wouldn't get the wind, but neither would it get any light ... so no good for growing things

It had bricks on the bottom shelf. The best ballast is a bale of compost though, I'll send Mr Sheds out for one on his way home.
It also had the most weight/biggest pots lower down, not on the top shelves. It was also wedged against the wall with boxes and containers of compost.
The wind just picked it up and tossed it over, then blew it round the garden, just for a laff.

I've just spent an hour outside in a gale and drizzle, in my dressing gown, picking broad bean seeds out of the mess. Everything is now repotted, fuchsias and geraniums look OK actually.

The labels though are hopelessly mixed up.

I just sowed another 24 Super Aquedulce broadies into pots, and have left them on the floor - they can't get blown over that way

is it on the patio, or on ground?

mine is out on the lawn, and as posted in another thread, I got some of those logroll stakes, they bash down about 12 inches into the ground, and have convenient screw holes for tying the greenhouse frame to. the cover still goes mad, but the frame doesn't shift at all now.

It's on the patio, although sometimes it's on the ground too (face down).

The lawn is far too exposed to put it on ... it will get totally destroyed. Ours is the windiest garden in the western world ... high brick walls & solid fences all around us, no trees or bushes to filter the wind (I have planted some, but it'll be 5 years before they're up to the job).

well the only other thing i can suggest then is pop down B&Q and get some of those big ring shaped fittings( eyelets, are they called?), get hubby to screw them into the wall at half greenhouse hieght, and tie the frame to them ( maybe 4, 2 at bottom?). that would hold it.

if I was closer I would pop round with me trusty hammer drill and sort it for you

Awww....poor you! That's horrid

I must admit it's one o the things that put's me off getting one o them flappy plastic, mini green house thingy's for my seed trays. I am down in a valley but sometimes the winds just whoosh through along with the odd mini tornado off the sea.

Hope you feel better soon hon, an if i lived a bit closer I'd pop round to start on the cleanup for you.

he has a toolbox which his dad gave him, with a random selection of useless rawl plugs and rusty screws in it ..
He bought himself a Workmate this year, and I swear it will never come out of its packet. The most DIY he has ever done is change the batteries in the Sky remote.

Feel for ya lass - Mine blew over last year and my garden's pretty secluded.

The way I solved it was to lay a paving slab on the bottom shelf of each mini greenhouse - they never moved again.

yep - I've eyelets drilled into the garage wall, top and bottom, and the mini greenhouse is strapped down with stretchy bungy things with a hook on each end. The only way it can move is if the garage blows away.

...and then you don't lose the bottom shelf by having to put a bag of compo on it to weigh it down.
