Are the troughs maybe somewhere cooler, or shadier, is the soil / compost different, did you use fertiliser in one but not the other, did you plant deeper in one than the other, has one lot had more water?
    Dunno, really

all were planted with the same compost, at the same time, there all in the same place outside so all get the same light, rain etc, i said it to my neighbour and she said the same has happend to her, is it that they just prefer the smaller pots to begin with,
im stumped with this one i dont know why its happend

100% speculation here - but what the heck.
It just occurred to me that maybe when the clove first starts to put out roots, if they go off exploring and report back that they have found only a limited amount of soil, maybe this prompts the clove to start on the green stuff a bit earlier. Whereas if they report back that there is masses of soil, no rush about the photosynthesis, the clove will maybe take its time and keep its head down for a bit longer?
Obviously more in a planty way...

My first time with garlic too.

I got problems - I tried pre-sprouting mine and for some weird reason mine were growing nice green top shoots but no roots

I've put them in 3" pots anyway and shoved them outside.

            Maybe it's just us newbies

Hmmm, I put out my garlic late and don't have anything happening. I've never grown garlic before tho' either, probably done something wrong (or put them out too late), not sure what tho'...

Help - garlic tops are gone yellow - is there something I can do?

I gave them a little drink about a week ago using bokashi liquid, but no change - still yellowing.

                Any ideas, please?

i tried growing some last year, it came up alright, then just disappeared, have absolutely no idea what happened to it.
planted some this year, about 3 weeks ago and there is no sign of life as yet, the ground has been a bit wet though so hope it hasn't rotted.

I put some in 3 weeks ago , and they are sprouting like mad! I tried some in a pot this year and the resulting bulbs weren't really worth having.

                          they could be drunk?

definitley shouldn't be yellow though, I am all for feeding things, honest i am, but i do wonder if 'we' overdo it sometimes, i had serious trouble with my herbs, until an old hand said' they are bloomin weeds, stop feeding the beggers' now i just neglect em, and they do FINE!

On a vaguely related note, as this is my first year growing Garlic I bought the Garlic Lovers pack from The Garlic Farm, this consists of 7 different varieties of Garlic plus 2 cloves of Elephant Garlic. The 7 different varieties are mostly doing well, 45 out of the 56 cloves in my raised beds are showing after 7 weeks. However the Elephant Garlic have not put in an appearance yet, is this normal or do I have a "Failure to Launch" situation?

Just out of interest I thought I'd share with you my elephant garlic experience (although not in a discouraging way, you understand!) - I planted some last spring, along with ordinary garlic. It did nothing at all, diddly squat. I dug the cloves up to look at them (nosy), they looked fine, so put them back. The ordinary garlic grew, thrived, was harvested, eaten. The elephant garlic sat sulking, still not rotted away though, so left it. Then....proof that elephants never forget....it has started to grow all this time later. So don't worry, it'll start, when it feels like it!

Thanks for that pipscariad, the 2 cloves of EG are in a pot, so I guess I'll just leave them and see what happens. Good to know there's still hope

Like I said, most of the 7 varieties of actual Garlic are doing well. The one that's lagging behind is Chesnok, I only have 2 out of 7 showing. Any of you Garlic experts know if this is normal?
