  • F1 seeds v regular seeds

I've noticed that if I don't sow all the veg seeds from a packet and save them for another year, the F1 seeds don't stay viable for as long as the ones that are not F1. I've some seeds 4 or 5 years old that give almost 100% germination, but the F1's never do, and with some not a single seed germinates.
Has anyone else noticed that? Do I need to store seeds differently? They are kept in a tin in a cool cupboard, not in the fridge as I know is recommended.

F1 seeds are very expensive. Although I haven't noticed their storing capabilities (I very rarely buy F1's) because they are hybrids and you can't save seed the following year and get a true replica of the first years sowing.
When you hybridise you can build in all kind of things and I wouldn't be surprised if seed shelf life wasn't a part of it.
They want you to buy the seeds from them each year so shelf life will naturally be low on the priority list.

Apart from Parsnips, I have kept seed for more than a year, both F1 and non F1, some varieties do seem to have a shorter shelf life, like you I don't keep mine in a fridge either.

I hadn’t noticed but like Snadger, I rarely buy F1 seeds. One thing I have noticed that you get fewer F1 seeds in a pack - so if it follows that we tend to sow less of them, germination could be down due to probability of numbers? Not sure if that makes sense

          Can't say I've noticed a difference. Although I don't grow that many F1 varieties.
