  • Transplanting Wild Garlic - Am I too late? Any tips?

    Hi all

There's tonnes of wild garlic growing locally and I want to transplant some to my garden. I have very similar sites in my garden to where it is now (stream side, shaded). I have landowner's permission.

What I wondered if whether I'm too late and this is a bad time to transplant? If so, when would be a good time?

Also, does anyone have any tips on how best to transplant?

    Many thanks

Pretty sure it's illegal to remove wild plants, having said that as they are now about to flower I would think it's definitely not the best time to move any.

My experience is that it will take over an area if don't keep it in serious check so I would keep that in mind.

As how, I've just taken a trowel and dug out a decent clump of it then planted it into its final position. Next year it will expand.

Considering how invasive it is, I'm pretty sure it will survive transplanting at any time of year, at least as long as you keep it watered.
As said above, though, removing whole plants from the wild is illegal. If it's private land, though, you can do it with the land owners permission, of course.

          Thanks for the quick replies.

Yes, it is private land and I have permission.

As for spreading and being invasive, I have a very long garden at around 450 metres. I'd be looking to plant it at the far end, so quite some distance from where the house is and where we grow anything. It's very much the wild end of the garden

Take loads of soil with the roots so hopefully they won't notice too much that they've been disturbed.
I may be wrong but I thing they are quite deep?
obviously plant at the same soil line on the stem too
            Loads of watering in too.

We have so much wild garlic growing in the lane behind our house.
I never wanted it in my garden but it's there all the same.
Be careful what you wish for, you may never get rid of it.

I transplanted some in to my garden a few years ago at roughly this time of year and it grew away no problem. I put mine in a cold, damp and shady corner under a large apple tree and it seems quite content there - It has seeded around a bit, but as the area near it is mostly rough grass and weeds I just run the rotary mower over the lot if I want to discourage stuff from spreading - the deer don't like it, which is a big plus for me.

It is bomb proof. The flowers will shrivel if you move it at this time of year. It will flower and set seed next year though.
