  • Do I have sufficient Dwarf French Beans?

I’m about to sow some Dwarf French Beans out into my raised beds, but because of the limitations of space, I only have room for 8 x canes for each to grow up. Would you consider this to be sufficient, bearing in mind that I live on my own, won’t be eating the beans every day, and will be growing 5 x different types to keep me going,

Dwarf French Beans don't need staking like runner beans.

As said above, dwarf french beans don't need staking, as they don't climb. They are small bushes, growing to 12-18 inches then stopping.
You may well need more than 8, though. 8 climbing french bean plants would be more than enough, but you get a lot less from each dwarf plant, and 8 may be insufficient, especially as the dwarf plants tend to crop over a shorter period than the climbing ones.
I would consider growing 8 now, and then sowing 8 more in late June, so that they take over from the first 8 when those start to peter out.

I’ve found dwarf French beans quite productive so long as you keep picking them, but as said, sowing another batch later is the way to go, and you may find you have some ground freed up by then from another crop that’s finished?

Thank you, both, for your replies.

I was showing my ignorance there, but am heartened by your replies, and grateful for your advice. Thank you again..

Some growers start with dwarf beans as they fruit earlier than climbers, but then sow climbing beans as well for after the dwarf beans are finished. In limited space you are better growing upwards. If you find you've grown 'too many' green beans you can let them 'pod up' and eat them as you would haricot beans. You can start both dwarf and climbing beans in modules until you want to plant them out.
