  • Feeding toms comfry

Urgh! I have come back to this site and it's slooooooow and the design is horrible. I can't find anything amid all this spacious white layout . Please change it back!

I have had debates here in the past regarding comfry being the best feed for toms with some dispute by some forum members. Well, watching GW this weekend and Monty Don says it's the BEST thing you can give your toms for feeding. Just thought I would point that out :-)

Nice to see you back on Marb, I feed comfrey alternating with a seaweed feed to my plants along with a nettle feed for leafy veg
As for the forum I think it's going quite fast and the presentation is fine, no matter where you go if you look for faults you will find them

Sorry, I got out of bed the wrong side today as things are not going well on a personal level so I shouldn't have posted feeling like that. I will just say that the aesthetics of the site are not making it easy to navigate like I was able to before.

On a more positive note, flowers and nature in general have been wonderful this spring.

Apologies accepted, personally I think there has too much made of the problems, gardening is for pleasure and forums for passing on knowledge gained from that pleasure and for learning from others, now that that's out the way back to the comfrey feed. Do you chop your leaves up before covering them with water, and is it just the leaves that you use, I collect mine from the wild and just scrunch them up and stuff them into an old pair of tights I also put some stones in first then last to keep the filled tights under the water, do you add any more water once you drop the level of your container, which I do though my tub is about half empty and I will be removing the spent comfrey and recharge with fresh material and finally why do you use a comfrey feed, is it because its cheap or do you think it makes the tomatoes taste better

Its hard to see where to reply with this new design as it looks like the bottom of the page, and not a box to type into. And it's slower than the old dial up days. No idea why they changed the site as it was fine as it was.

Yes I feed because it's more organic, cheap (readily in my garden) and the best thing for toms as Monty says. I chop the leaves and stems and put in an old wine fermented and use the tap to decant when needed but this time I might filter out the bits first as they tent to block the tap outlet.

I agree about the reply box a bit on the small side, but as most of my posts are done from a tablet the space was always restricted the next time I use the computer I will check to see how it looks on that
As for the tap getting blocked that's why I use old tights to hold the leaves and if the flow does get restricted I can easily free it by pushing the bundle back with a stick, also glad I read this as I have a some leaves steeping in a tub, which I have to scoop the liquid out with a cup I also have a fermenting tub which I will never use again so I will transfer into that

I've just planted a row of comfrey along a fence in nettle infested land. I have a 220L water butt that I stuff with leaves and then fill with water. Leave a couple of weeks and then start using. I've only used on tomatoes up till now but intend to use on more and more stuff as the supply increases.

A nettle feed I'd high in nitrogen, I use that for a lot of my leaf veg, onions and leek as well

My understanding is that early in the growing season you want a high Nitrogen feed to get the plants to grow and produce leaves. Then once the plants start to produce flowers you want a high potash feed to encourage fruit (after all tomatoes are grown for fruit not leaves). Comfrey feed is high in potash so good for most fruiting crops including tomatoes.

(That said, making comfrey tea is not something I choose to do because it stinks to high heaven).
