Good Morning everyone, not been on for a while with everything that's going on! My over wintered onions are looking really healthy in the raised bed. Just looking for tips on when to stop feeding/watering to get the best crop. Thanks, and hope you are staying safe and keeping well......and growing great veg!

I don't grow from sets anymore, but when I did sow in the Autumn I treated them the same as any other, Onions seem to need water to stop them going to seed due to stress and a slow release fertilizer like Blood, Fish and Bone seemed to help mine along. I enjoy growing from seed these days and treat them the same way too.

The onion tops will start to yellow & begin to lay on the soil during June, when they start looking like that they don’t need watering they need to dry out, this is when we get rain,so don’t worry they’ll dry off again. I lay all mine on metal shelving from the blowaway, air can get round easily to dry them. When the stems are dried I cut them off leaving about an inch of stem & leave all the skins on. Brush any mud off the dried roots & cut the roots as close to the bulb. Some people leave longer stems & tie the onions in a plait or some way to hang them.Location : Essex

The annoying thing about Japanese onions is that they sit all winter filling you with hope. then just when you think you have got away with it, they start throwing seed heads up!
None of mine have seeded up til now but I am fully expecting that at least 10% will and possibly more. We live in hope.My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
