Next year starts here: got Jack's magic and top soil for renewing greenhouse beds; seed potatoes arriving any day; aubergine seed going in today.

Going to do everything right this year. Well, maybe.

I've been having a Christmas and weather enforced rest for the last few days - everything is far too wet and it has been too cold and damp to do anything much outside. All I have managed to do is scrape up wet leaves off the weed matting path at the allotment (after I slipped and nearly fell on them) and harvested some carrots and lettuce leaves.

The day got rather hi-jacked by a problem with my solar panels - luckily I was able to find a local installer who could come and have a look today. It seems the very damp weather has caused water to get into the system somewhere and it is going to be a case of putting up scaffolding and having a closer look. At least I am reassured that the fault is not dangerous and the panels are working again after turning themselves off for a couple of days over Christmas.

I did get time to cut down the crocosmia in the front garden while I was waiting for the man to arrive.

I did go down to the allotment and construct a makeshift plastic cover for the romanesco and some of the PSB as last year the combination of wet and frost caused the central heads to rot.

Far too cold and wet for gardening today and no gardening time tomorrow.

The weekend seems to have escaped with the bare minimum of gardening - checking and watering plants under cover, checking the allotment and harvesting a large carrot. I did sow some lettuce and microgreens indoors.

I need to get a bag of compost for some indoor sowing,everything else (cell trays/sieve) all in the kitchen ready,stored on top of the kitchen cupboards. I should go through my seeds first,if I need to buy petunia seed I’ll get them with the compost,I haven’t looked at my seed packets for months,it’s nice looking through seed packets & remembering what you’ve got

Didn't get much time today so only managed to harvest some PSB. Also phoned the garden centre to see if they have seed potatoes and onion sets yet - they do, but not the varieties I want (Lady C and Sturon). I can see it is going to be difficult this year - I am already struggling to get my favourite carrots and cucumbers

Went to the garden centre yesterday for compost, onion sets and seed potatoes. Came back with the first 2 but they had no Desiree potatoes. Otherwise too busy for gardening yesterday and frozen solid here today.
