We've been doing this for the past couple of years. We just lifted half (about 150) of our onions and shallots and only 3 showed any sign of white rot

Thanks. I have just lifted all the onions at the allotment, nowhere near "ready" and half have visible signs of white rot. I watered the bed with water that had had onion foliage soaking in it for 24hrs last summer - I will try garlic powder this time.

I have to admit I was very sceptical but it does appear to work. We rotate our beds so we make sure the bed destined for onions have at least 2 lots of garlic powder spread over at least 3 months before planting. The other beds get a dose too. We haven't lifted the onions sown from seed yet, just the sets (autumn planted). Will be interesting to see how they get on.

Yesterday morning I was helping a local group prepare the ground for a wildflower meadow so I hadn't much energy left for gardening. Managed a bit of weeding, deadheading and watering and harvested a cucumber and a courgette.
