  • Un-seasonal seed potato question

Following the success of my greenhouse-grown new potatoes from some forgotten and heavily sprouted Accord potatoes left from last years crop, I'm thinking ahead to next year. I'd like to get hold of some earlies, maybe Casablanca, in early January or even December if possible, to give time for chitting for planting early February in my cold greenhouse.

Can anyone suggest a potential supplier who could post me seed potatoes this early? They never appear that early in local outlets and when I've ordered from Suttons in the past, they generally arrive in February. Surely someone out there must supply greenhouse growers for early new spuds.

      Thanks Rary,

I had a quick look at their website. it says they deliver from end of January onwards, which is a bit later than I was hoping for. I might give them a call and ask if it's possible to dispatch a little earlier for Channel Island customers.

You could save some of your own from this years earlies if you grow them outside as well as in the greenhouse. So each year, at end July save a few of your egg sized earlies for next years greenhouse crop. Lawrence D Hills suggests spreading them on the surface in the sun for 2 to 3 weeks then store in the dark in shallow boxes somewhere cool if possible till you want to chit them.

Check simplyseeds https://www.simplyseed.co.uk/potato-seeds.html, I seem to remember that they offered different dispatch dates (incl Jan) when I ordered from them a couple of years ago.

That's a great idea Mark. The only flaw is that I'm not growing any really early varieties outside. I've got International Kidney, but they are 12-15 weeks. It could be a good plan for future years though.
