  • Blight warning today

The first blight warning of the year from https://blightwatch.co.uk/ arrived in the inbox this morning. This is no surprise as the weather is due to remain warm and humid for the next few days.

If you are new to growing potatoes or outdoor tomatoes, this is a useful website that will send email alerts when the conditions in your area are favourable for potato blight. It is very early for blight at the moment, and there isn't a great deal you can do to prevent it although some people recommend spraying the leaves with a solution of aspirin. However the alert gives you a warning to keep an eye on your plants.

Another useful page is https://blight.ahdb.org.uk/BlightReport which shows you where farmers have reported incidents of blight this year. There are no current entries so I am not absolutely certain that they are updating it this year, but it may just be that with dry weather until recently there has been no blight reported.

Maybe check that you are still signed up for them - I haven't had to re-register this year but occasionally I have.

I did think of that but been over to the site and last 14 days are all green apart from today's orange. Hopefully it will stop like that

I got my blight red alert this morning. It's quite early in the season so hopefully there aren't many spores around yet.

                      Well...I'm not surprised!
its very damp and humid outside for us..
My outdoor tomatoes aren't outside yet - they are still in the blowaway!

The spuds on the other hand are looking very healthy...late, but healthy....for now...* crosses fingers...,

Hopefully it's still a bit too early for blight spores to be about.

It probably also helps that because of the hot dry summers these last two years, blight incidences were very low (or at least they were where I live), and so that should mean fewer infected plants to carry spores into the next (i.e. this) year.

We haven't had an alert in the West Country yet but I definitely recommend using the blightwatch site if you want to grow maincrop potatoes.
