  • Cayenne Chilli Pepper Plants

    Hello Folks,

I've been given a couple of Cayenne Chilli plants. They are only about 5 inches high. Would I be right in thinking they aren't going to produce anything this year and just try and keep them going for next year? I've never grown chillies before so any tips welcome.

Nestled somewhere in the Cambridgeshire Fens. Good soil, strong winds and 4 Giant Puffballs!

They should produce in their first year, I grow new Cayennes every year from seed.

Oh that would be good, thanks Burnie, I thought they were just too small to expect fruit this year.

I don't have much luck with some chillies, but Cayenne seem to grow like weeds...…..(luckily and we like eating them).

I still have loads in my freezer having planted about 12 a few years ago. I hadn't expected all the seeds to germinate, grow and fruit!!

I wonder....Maybe put a cloche over yours peanut until they start to flower to bring them on a bit??? ( I'm no chilli expert so maybe a regular chilli grower would comment on that idea?)

They grow really quickly when they’re happy - hot, sunny spot and plenty of moisture. They do best in pots for me. Cayenne is not an easy variety to overwinter so you’d be better to treat them as annuals.

I've got mine on a sunny windowsill in the house as my greenhouse is quite full. They're flowering .
