  • Tumbling tom red - will it ever set fruit?

Hi all, I bought a ‘Tumbling Tom’ plant from the supermarket a month or two back. It wasn’t a big plant, but my grown-from-seed basket toms (‘Maskotka’ and ‘Tumbler’) had only just germinated, so I thought this plant might give me a head start on the others. The plant started flowering shortly after I bought it, and now has literally hundreds of flowers on it... but not one has set fruit! It’s not like the flowers are dropping off unfertilised, they just seem to sit there. In the meantime, my Maskotkas have grown, started flowering, and one now has three pea-sized fruit forming.
so does ‘Tumbling Tom’ set and ripen all its fruit at the same time? Or is it just a dud plant?

    Is it being grown indoors?
Tomato flowers can self-pollinate so don't need insect pollination, but they usually need some movement in order to make the pollen drop onto the stigma. Outdoors, the wind is enough to do this, but indoors it can pay just to give the plants a gentle shake every day or two.

Hi Bario. Just tried reading up on this.
The only reason I can see might be the hot weather.
Might the greenhouse have been too hot.
Some tomatoes wont set fruit if it's too hot.
Hope this may help as we have had a run of very hot weather recently.

In the glory of the garden.

I bought one in full flower, with a handful of fruit already set. But I can't see any new fruit setting in spite of all the blooms ... It's weird. Mine is outside in our sheltered back yard.

Pollination seems hit and miss on all my tommies every year, always get a decent crop, but never close to a hundred per cent.(Which could be a good thing as I always grow way too many lol)

I'm having the same with tumbling tom in spite of prolific cropping last year. That said they are fruiting, but not that much considering the fact they are smothered in blossom. The odd pollinator is getting in the greenhouse but not so many this year. I'm ruffling the plants with my hand when I go in there in the hope that it will help with pollination.

Wait ................ my Tumbling Tom are always one of the last cherry determinates to set fruit. Maskotka are always one of the first. At the moment I've got lots of fruit set on all my outdoor determinates EXCEPT Tumbling Tom Red.
