Well I seem to be the exception. My potatoes were going really well having been planted in March.First and second earlies. Then 2-3 weeks ago they lost their nice colour looked iffy and well...looks like potato wilt. Spotted leaves yellowing.
I am so disappointed. I had mixed some compost with soil and they are in bags. So had a good start. Watered fed and looks like I will not be having home grown tatties any time soon.

My Charlotte's in bags have been great. They're by the back doorstep so have benefited from the warmth of the house earlier in the year and have benefited from regular watering every evening as they're literally on my doorstep!
We've harvested three bags so far with one more bag full to go. Decent crops from each bag so far.
Last year's spuds that sprouted by themselves in the plot have produced a smaller but useful crop. I'm leaving the ones i planted in the ground this year for another week or two.
Soooo tasty! And crisp when you chop them for potato salad!Last edited by Stan79; 30-06-2020, 07:37 PM.

Our second Earlies went in end on March, I put a note to say start lifting from 10th June, I ran the hoe round them this weekend and disturbed som enear the surface, they look great and we will start lifting them this week as needed. We never had any first earlies and the main crop have fabulous tops and as far as I can see decent tubas so far.
We planted with a goodly amount of organic material around them and ridged up the first time with more, they have been kept moist through the long dry spring which was an effort. The recent rains mean they are fattening up a treat. This could be our best crop in 5 years. We haven't really done much different either!

Like virtually everything at my allotment, they are behind due to zero rain in May here in Suffolk. Dug up 2 Nadines at the weelend and got about 2 dozen golf ball sized spuds. Not investigated the Jerseys yet. Cara and PFA flowering well, and Maris Pipers mostly healthy. Had a couple of blight alerts last week so have sprayed my usual aspirin solution to help keep it at bay a bit longerAre y'oroight booy?

Dug up my first Kestrel (a second early) plant today.
Big yield. I got 1.3kg from one plant, and some of them were real whoppers. I wouldn't have expected so much from a second-early so soon. I thought they usually too longer to mature.
With 11 more plants like that still in the ground (and none of them are actually dying back yet, so the remaining potatoes will only get bigger), I think i'm in for a bumper crop.

Earlies planted were rocket. Dug first 2 roots 13th June (420g only), 2 more 26th June 1.7kg, 2 more 1st July 2kg so digging now as needed. Planted some swift as well but if the potatoes are like the tops, I don't expect to get too many from them. Then I've got a few each of vitabella and kestrel which should see us through to when the maincrop carolus start.
Some slug damage but not a lot.

Dug out the first ones to flop over. Some sort of red commercial spuds that were sprouting in storage. 7 tubers planted result 12 kilos of decent potatoes and they haven’t been watered much. I will be interested to see what the true seed potatoes that have been watered produce.Gardening requires a lot of water - most of it in the form of perspiration. Lou Erickson, critic and poet
