  • Please be aware that it is going to be unusually windy for the time of year at times over the next few days. If you have things like garden furniture, trampolines, gazebos, wheelie bins etc it would be wise to make sure they are well secured or put away.

    • After a relatively warm spell with warm nights, things are about to turn a lot colder. On Tuesday low pressure will bring a cold front down from the north with the wind turning into the north afterwards. The source of the air is quite a long way north and there will be a significant drop in temperature. By the end of the week as pressure starts to rise and skies clear the nights could be cold enough for ground frost, and even air frost in vulnerable areas. It would be wise to shut greenhouse doors and attempt to protect anything possible with fleece if local forecasts indicate cold.

This is not winter type cold, but it is well below average for September.

          • Morning all.

Raining here - rain before seven, fine before eleven, I hope Not too cold though, but set to cool through the week, down as far as 7C so no frosts forecast.

I'll have to find something to do indorrs for now - dusting doesn't appeal, perhaps I'll do the crossword and some reading.

                            • Hurricane Kirk

This has been a major category 4 hurricane in the middle of the Atlantic and has now been downgraded to a category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 110-115mph and is steadily weakening. It is heading towards Europe, with the current predicted track taking the centre through the Bay of Biscay and into northern France as an ex-tropical storm. It is quite unusual for a hurricane to still be categorized as an ex-tropical storm after making landfall in Europe. Contrary to some scaremongering reports, this is not going to be a category 2 hurricane in the English Channel.

As far as the UK is concerned, there may or may not be some very heavy rain and very strong winds in the south on Wednesday-Thursday. Yesterday some of the GFS predicted rainfall spikes for London were off the scale, but the system has trended slightly south today and impacts here look less severe. There may still be plenty of rain on already saturated ground, so flooding is a possibility. High tides from storm surge may also be possible on southern and western coasts including Ireland, although I have not seen any specific forecasts of this yet.

The situation in France is more severe with huge amounts of rain and very strong winds possible, so keep an eye on the forecast if you live there, particularly in the north west of the country. Some impacts could also be felt in northern Spain and storm surge is likely along the coast of Biscay.

After Kirk has passed eastwards it will draw down some cold air from the north, so be prepared for another cold snap towards the end of the week, with the possibility of snow on northern hills.
