The sprouts on my brussel sprout plants are not forming properly. They are all open and not sprouty. Why ? Will future sprouts developing be better ?

I'm no expert but i'm led to believe that brussels sprouts, that are open is caused by the plant not being firmed into the ground well enough, when planting. Or if the soil is of an open type. I was always led to believe it was cos the ground wasn't firm enough (loose, infertile soil, lack of nutrients, makes them blow). But my Evesham sprouts have all blown this year (although Dobby can grow this one). My other ones (Maximus?) haven't, so it ain't that.
Modern F1 varieties are less likely to blow than older, open-pollinated ones. I did Roodnerf cheapo ones from Lidl last year and they were fab.

I also agree that most F1's seem to have it bred out of them?...........but at a price!

I agree wiyh those that say one reason for sprouts blowing is because they aren't firmed in well enough. I have also been told that another reason can be over watering. However, if this is the case, after the wet summer we've had why haven't everybody's sprouts blown?It is the doom of man, that they forget.Comment

I did everything right this year, you could have put an officeblock on the foundations I gave them and still I had half of mine blow. Strangely enough its only the bottom half of most of the stalks that have blown.
I never watered them and they were in rich, but not too rich soil.
To answer if you can eat them. I ate some of the looser ones and they were fine. I know you can eat the tops of sprout plants, so cannot see one reason why you can't have them like little cabbages.

I think I got 20 X F1 Brussels Sprout seeds for £3 odd as opposed to 500 seeds of an open pollinated type for under a quid!

Thanks, everyone for your input. I do not know what variety my sprouts are-I bought them at a garden centre and they were unamed. I suppose the soil could not be firm enough. I have staked them recently. I guess it is just one of those things. Sad - I shall have to buy sprouts for Christmas dinner but shall eat the tops if nothing else.Comment
