  • Onions going to seed

This year I have planted three different types? of onions, some from seed the normal type of sets and heat treated sets and the ones that have shot are the ones from seed, this is not what I expected as I was under the impression that seed grown onions were less likely to run to seed, they were all planted at the same time and I don't think that the ones from seed were ever under stress at any time so what else would cause this
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Bolt tendency tends to vary heavily by variety. Red types are especially prone, but even within one colour the specific varieties vary.

Generally attributed to stress of some sort. Time of sowing/transplanting,too much water/too little, temperature high/low etc et
      c. Like you I have mostly had problems in the past with sets and can't recall onions from seed bolting. Luckily this year mine have been bolt free, both from sets and seed, which won't cheer you up at all.

Hope you are left with enough to use rary.

I think the recent extended heat wave (at lease here in the East) has been a stress for them, even when well watered It's not something they really like. That early dry spell in spring shocked some of our sets, the rest we lifted in July and they are sun bathing now.

A couple of my Ailsa Craig onions from seed are also bolting and the rest are pretty poor too, I also have more carrots going to seed this year than usual, so I'm blaming the weather, it can't possibly be me...........................................

Onions from seed have done well for me this year.
            It's probably just luck.

I have a reasonable crop thanks Snadger and I have them all in the greenhouse drying, even some of the smaller ones will get used and I think it is the weather which has caused my problems, this is the first for a long time that I have sown onion seeds and even though the results aren't that great I will try seeds again next year, but I will need to find something to plant in my now vecated onion bed

Glad you have a reasonable crop Rary. It has indeed been a strange year weatherwise. I have just sown some Mooli where I lifted my Japanee onions. All my other seed sown and set sown plants are still in the ground as I like them to be nearly fully dry before lifting.
Spring cabbage and PSB will be planted where they were.

After torrential rain last week which flattened all the growth it was time for me to lift them as for getting them nearly dry that's a luxury i have never had and thanks for the mention of Mollie hut

I planted purple sprouting broccoli plants after my onions came out.
Of course, that does require you to already have some small plants ready to go in, as it is too late to sow new ones. You could always buy plants, though, from a garden centre or online (I got some fairly cheap from eBay last year, as cabbage root fly got into my potted ones and killed them before I could plant them out).

Thanks for all the replies folks I just came across an article where it said any veg plant running to flower the stem should be removed immediately to stop that plant triggering the rest going to seed
