  • Bean failure

My usually-reliable Blau Hilda have been something of a fail this year.
Planted them out April/May (can't remember) and some died of something (could be frost, could be overspray from next door, could be disease)

The rest perked up and grew nicely, first picking end July, early August. Then went they all just died. Leaves went pale and then died. I harvested all the beans and took them home. thanks to bad storage, they went mouldy. They have also mostly sprouted in the pods. I've never had that before

Did I put them out to early? has the weather confused them? They are old (2016) seeds, but they germinated well enough

    Most annoying.

I thing that this year the weather has been so strange that some plants haven't a clue what's going on. It was very dry in spring after a wet winter, there were some very late and quite sharp frosts, we have had very hot spells interspersed between unusually cold spells and its now gone cool and wet again. My beans have been very late flowering although they are producing now, but there is a noticeable gap between the ones that are ready and nearly ready and the next size down. The cucumbers have been similar, producing several of the same size then nothing for a bit, then several more. The tomatoes are about a month behind normal, having been treated exactly the same as usual.

I think we just have to accept that there will be failures this year (my greenhouse melon plant looks a write-off for a start) and put it down to the very odd weather.

I planted Cobra & Blue Lake, Cobra got off to a flying start, produced a bunch of beans and then stalled for a while where as the Blue lake took ages to get growing and then all of a sudden took off and have been producing ever since
