  • All that glitters is not Sungold

I grow many cherry toms, my favourite is Sungold.
However there are better looking toms.
Ildi for example is a small bright yellow pear shaped tom.
However it doesn't seem to have much taste.
    Anyone else found this.
    Thanks Jimmy

I should start by saying I don't rate Sungold for flavour, I prefer Gardeners Delight, I am growing Red Plum(pear shaped) and they don't have a lot of flavour either. I quite like tumbling reds as another small Tom, but I am going away from growing small toms and going back towards Ailsa Craig sized fruits. Not a huge fan of beef steaks either, fussy lot aren't we lol

I defo prefer black cherry to sungold, at least a fully ripe sungold which I find a touch too sweet. I prefer them just before this as they a bit more acid to balance it out. Black cherry just tastes like that when ripe but also with a deeper tomato flavour.

I like the flavour but have found they are the worst of my types for splitting.

I'm with annie8 on this. Annie, do you grow them outdoors? I grew them in a greenhouse once (the only year I had a greenhouse) and they were a great success, no splitting at all.

In gh and outdoors. Certainly outdoors is worse for splitting, but a few in the gh too if I don’t keep close eye.

Found this season that my sungold have gone soft overnight. Had a lot of them fall off as well. Just learning as I go along. Could not get my usual compost and had to make do with another that looks like bits of carpet [well known make]. The usual compost are fine but the old carpet ones are all soft. Is it just me.
