Okay, so i am going to try something a little different next year. i am going to try and grow a different type of veg from my normal staples.

    On the topic of Onions.

I am going to only grow 2 types of onions. What two are your favourites and would recommend to me to try? and why?

Just a little fun to see what / if there is a general feeling about a specific type.

I've been growing Centurion these last two years. They're a Which best buy and give an excellent yield, keep well, and don't seem to bolt (you can get the sets real cheap, too. They sell them in Wilko and Poundland, and they had them in Lidl last year).

I like Sturon, which are reliable, make decent sized onions and have a nice sweet flavour.

I prefer red onions, but the sets are prone to bolting, so I grow from seed, usually Robinsons Mammoth.

for whites i have grown Senshyu which had varying levels of success

For reds i went for Red Baron which were quite successful. only 2 bolted and one didn't come to much.

Does growing from seed reduce the likelihood of bolting?

For white onions I stick with Sturon. They are reliable, tasty and a good size. For red onions, this year I tried Red Arrow. They have done well, with some of them being real biggies. They are quite sweetish in flavour, as a red onion should be IMHO. I'll be looking to grow them again next year.
