  • Mystory squash

This is a bit of an odd story but here goes.
From time to time odd bags of mostly onions have occasionally been appearing in a footpath to the rear of the houses in our street.
Today there was a bag of mostly carrots plus a number of pieces of fruit including a squash/melon.
I would be interested to find out if it is a melon or pumpkin and the chances of it containing seeds that will grow on the allotment.
Have a look. It is about six inches/15cm across.

All types of squash and pumpkin are edible as long as they do not taste bitter (the only toxic compound which can potentially occur in cucurbits is very bitter, so it's quite obvious if it's present).
Whether they are actually worth eating, however, is another story entirely. Most ornamental ones are very bland, watering and insipid.

^^^ yeh...I agree ...one year I grew ornamental squash near to butternut etc etc....the resulting crops the following year from X pollination were disgusting.
Such a waste of time and space!

We will cook it and see what it is like.
I may not save any seed if it is not tasty and may spoil others close by.
