  • Why are my Brussels so bad?

Bought variety Sanda from RealSeeds, planted in poly tunnel April.
Firmly potted in to well composted bed two foot apart July.
A large proportion of my sprouts are either blown or, when you
squeeze them “spongy”. Also, on seed packets, they are pictured
crammed together, mine are spaced out along the stem.
    Any ideas anyone?

It is likely to be too much compost.
I had some cabbages that ended up turning into loose leaved winter greens after I planted them over a trench of kitchen waste.
The plants must be producing too much stalk wood between the sprouts.

I am not sure the poly tunnel is the best place for sprouts? They could be putting on too much stem growth hence the reason for distance between sprouts? Only a guess though. Blown sprouts, or any brassicas for that matter, is usually attributed to the soil not being firm enough?

If they've been in a polytunnel all this time then they may also just have come on too early, and are now past their best.

Last year a lot of my sprouts were blown I still ate them they tasted fine, and if anyone had asked I would have fibbed and called them flower sprouts.

I treat mine rough too....some watering through the drought but I think they taste sweeter once hit by frost?

mine are tiny this year...and opened up a bit but they still taste lovely!

I didn't have much luck with sprouts when i grew them. i tried them in the greenhouse but it seems like this wasn't quite the right thing to do. If i can get hold of a couple of seeds from somewhere i might give them another go. i don't grow a lot of anything due to space, just lots of different things in small quantity so buying a whole seed packet probably isn't for me.
