Leeks

I have just started to harvest my first home grown leeks, organic grown 'Pandora'. First pulled leek was added to a creamy chicken supreme with mushrooms and rice.
, ....i will pull another this weekend to add to a chicken casserole with leeks, carrots , and dumplings.
My Pandora are of a not bad size as you can see but i am looking at the ones in the supermarket an they are a bit thicker in girth.

I planted the 'Pandora' seed in Feb last year , so i am thinking that i might do as the competition leek growers do an start my leeks off early and plant some leek seeds this weekend.
I will follow up with more in Feb so i can stagger the plantings or could i do what Snadger does an just stagger the planting out from pot to free land?

If you slice your leek off just below the soil, instead of pulling it out, it will regrow.

I do both, I stagger sowing so that I've always got some in a pot somewhere to be planted out, and when I do I put them out in batches and heel them in somewhere so that I've always got some ready to come out. I do prefer them thinner though - the bigger they get the less sweet they are, so sow plenty and pick more, younger.

It depend a lot on the variety and when you want to harvest them?

It's a bit of a tradition around here, for the showmen (who are quite fanatical) to sow their leeks on New Years Day and there onions on Christmas Day!
If you ask me though..........it's just an excuse to get out of the washing up (not that I would ever do a thing like that!)

I've got a mixture of Musselburgh and Autumn Giant. Have had a couple up already, and will be having 2-3 tomorrow to go in the slo-cooker with a nice beefy casserole.
I've had a crap year on the plot, but so nice that I stil have something to harvest.

I have started a few more off in modules today to experiment with , then i will sow the bulk of them in the new year. As this year were my first growing year with them i just followed all the instructions on the packet to the letter. Am looking forward to customizing things a bit this year now i have found me feet . I have a massive new coldframe to utilise too thanks to november 'grow your own magazine' monthly project!
