  • Too early?

Am dying to get going with some planting so need someone to tell me if I’m being daft. I have red rookie cabbage and Clapton cauliflower seeds and both say they can be started indoors in Feb. My gh is unheated though and has been really cold recently regularly less than zero overnight. I could start them indoors then move to the greenhouse once they germinate? Or should I just hold off for a while until the weather improves and it gets a bit warmer. I am in Edinburgh.

That far north, I'd definitely hand on until at least late February. The earliest sowing times are really for the south of England, or indeed the south west.

I have some cauliflowers that I sowed in November sat out in my unheated Derbyshire greenhouse. They're about 6 inches tall potted up in 3 inch pots and they're holding their own. Any smaller and I think they'd be done for, and I wouldn't try germinating anything outdoors.

For me, early Feb is when I get in the wife's good books because by the end of the month every window will be filled with seed trays.

I'm just up the coast and all I'm growing from new sowings are Onions and Leeks, they are in a double glazed conservatory and are not really growing, I'm waiting untill this snow and ice has gone, forecast in a week or so.

Yup think it’s best to hold off for a bit. Was minus 5 in the gh the other night. Will wait at least until this snow goes.
