Self watering planters for greenhouse

I used some of those hoselock grow bag waterers, and had some of the biggest crops I've ever had, I reckon tom's must love having a constant steady supply of water, because some of the trusses I had where crazy

I have two quadgrows, each with the holiday watering kit, ie a separate water butt each. Two years ago, when we had a warm summer I found I could go eight days without topping up. I was growing full sized tomatoes, smaller plants would maybe take up less water. I have a chilligrow too, I grow snack peppers in it. I love my quadgrows, and wouldn't be without them.

Hi, if it is greenhouse sensation you're phoning, look out, because they charge for phone calls. I had to ring for some dimensions that weren't on the website, the first person couldn't answer the question, the second one could, but it cost me over a pound, when I got my phone bill in. Not happy!

That said, the quadgrows are great, but I won't be phoning again.

For those who are handy and are up for the challenge I inhertited a greenhouse that had the following set up - mine stopped working and I never got round to repairing it - I want to try and get it up and running again this year if I can:

Sorry if this is badly described:

- Greenhouse benches along one wall with a gap in the middle
- A board (I think mine is woodchip at the moment but I guess it could be large flat trays?) along the top of the benches with capillary matting on top of that - the capillary matting is longer than the benches and dangles into the gap between the benches
In the gap is a platic trough, attatched to the benches - in here goes water - the filling of this water into this trough is managed but a toilet cystern ball thingie s on an arm (yep, this is why I haven't fixed it as this is out of my usual depth, lol)
- The capllary matting hangs into the trough to soak up water
- There is a platic water tank mounted up high in the greenhouse on a decent shelf - this feeds the trough when the toilet ball thngs gets low enough. It was also originally filled with water from a tap system that was fed by hose under the grass back to the hous but we have since had building work that pulled that up, but could be filled when needed from a hose I guess?


I'd get photos, but the green house is like a storage space at the moment and I have lost the benches under general garden and chicken-stuff clutter.

Yes it would be easy enough to re-enstate ... get an outside tap fitted ( either a kit and do it yourself or get a plumber to do it - its really not too hard) and then get some of the plastic pipe (the bright blue stuff - or you can get the balck version) and connect that to the tap and t'other end to the header tank its all push fittings so you dont need to worry too much about fittings. then wrap it in the foam insulation thats designed for water pipes in your loft - its has a split in it so just pushes over...and voila ! a working watering system.

Another way to do it would be to get some of the smaller blue barrels and fit them on the north side of your greenhouse and bring the outlet of your gutteringin through the greenhouse and fill the 'butts' the this also has the added benefit of being a thermal mass that will heat up and act like a storage heater in winter to help keep the frost out.

I meant to start clearing out the greenhouse last weekend that came and went - I am feeling more inspired to o and clear it out now that I have something else that I want to try and rescue and not just some bench space!
