    I have been offered a 'redundant' bin, are they any good as water buts

    As long as the bottom hasn't worn through by being dragged along the ground, I don't see why not. They're water-tight normally, they're a decent size, and you can easily buy a water butt tap, drill a hole in the side, and fit it.

      I have one against my lean-to.
      I use it as a dip tank and have no lower tap as the base is below ground level.
      It has an overflow pipe leading to the footings of a former outside toilet. It was installed when the lean-to was built.

        We have got one and we installed a tap in ours. Of course it was me that had to grovel around inside when we were fitting it. I used to fill a big sack with comfrey leaves and submerge it in water in it to use as plant food.
