They'll be fine together. On the front page of this website, there's lots of useful information about growing all sorts of fruit and veg. For garlic it says to plant 30cm between rows and 15cm between each plant in each row. It says to plant onion sets 10–15cm apart in rows that are spaced 20–25cm apart.
The thing to remember with all alliums (onions, garlic, leeks etc) is to try to avoid planting them in the same place each year. This helps to avoid the build up of diseases such as white rot.

The important thing about spacing is not to have them so close together in the rows that you can't get your hoe between them once they have swollen .
And leave yourself somewhere to walk! We do 2 or 3 close spaced rows then one 'walking' spaced row.
This may sound a bit obsessive but I hoe walking backwards so as not to compact the hoed soil and always squish a few.I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."
