  • How many veg plants can I fit in 30L pots?

    Hello,

I’m using all my pots from last year but I have a ton of 30L big pots. I’d like to know how many of these plants I can fit into these 30L pots?

    -Cucumber plants
    - Tomato plants big
    - Tomato plants baby
    - courgette plants
    - Baby corn plants

i also have 6 15cm wide x 15cm deep pots so 6inch. Could I get one of any of these into those size pots?

    thank you

All those plants should be all right, but it depends on what compost you use, the plants will need feeding with a liquid feed if you are to get a decent crop.

Yeah I know they’re ok I was wondering how many I can get into the 30L pots? I.e 1 or 2 cucumber plants in one pot or 2/3 tomato plants in one?

I would go one per pot of tom , cuc , courgette. You could always stack two 15cm on top of each other ( cut the bottom out of the top one ) making a deeper pot .
        I've no idea re sweetcorn.

Two cucumber plants are ok 30 cm apart from each other in the 30litre container. Some tomato plants are a bit bushy,do you know the variety names? If they’re cordons two could fit in the container including a French marigold to keep whitefly away, they can be sowed direct soon. Those 6 inch pots would be good for some parsley or a miniature tomato variety?

My courgette plants are always really wide,I don’t think there’s enough space for two courgette but maybe one courgette & one cucumber? Cucumbers can grow up a bamboo stick out the way of the courgette? Money maker tomato plants are quite wide plants, spreads about two foot when I’ve grown them in the ground. Some varieties aren’t as wide growing especially the cherry tomatoes.

Personally I wouldn’t put more than one tomato in a 30l pot. As other say you might get away with two cucumbers. Never tried to grow a courgette in a pot but they spread and need a fair bit of space so would probably say just one. Similarly always grow sweetcorn outside but might squeeze 2 in. Think they are all too big to grow in a 15cm pot for long.

A 30 litre is pot is about a square foot or more of surface area right? There are loads of online tables for square foot gardening for various crops. I've never tried it but worth a Google. Fwiw 30 litres of compost is enough for 2 tomatoes and cucumbers but youd need to train them apart at angles for space / airflow. And get ready for lots of watering. You'd not get 2 courgettes in a 30 litre pot. But a single one would probably crop enough anyway if you looked after it. An old chap on our plots does early sweetcorn in a 35 litre bucket in his tunnel. 4 plants at the edges. And early French and runner beans. Same, 4 plants. Neither for max crops just early before the outside ones are ready.

When I tip out the 30l tomato and cucumber pots at the end of the year, they seem to be pretty full of roots, so I'm not convinced that either those or courgettes would llke to double up in a pot.

I would say it depends on what you are filling them with.
If you are just using compost then I would stick to just one of each of those plants, and maybe 2 sweetcorn. But if you are using at least 50% soil in the mix (loam or clay) then you could certainly double that (except the courgette; best to just stick to one of those).
