Do I need to feed or give fertiliser for Little gem lettuce?

Hi,

Ive tried to find a solid answer but I get different answers from different sites. Do I need to put fertiliser or feed my little gem lettuce plants? I’m growing in pots and they are about 5 inches tall now and ready for their final pot. I’m using just basic multi purpose compost.

Also same for spring onions, do they need anything?

Hello and welcome.

It depends on your compost. Have a look at the bag. Most say they contain feed to support plants for three months. You can get some that don't contain feed, however. Feed according to your compost and the length of time your plants have been growing.

Also, as you're growing in pots and there's a tendency for nutrients to get washed out when watering, if your compost contains feed, you might want to feed before the three months is up.

Remember, your plants won't want much feed. Lettuce and spring onions tend not to be very demanding plants. Check the instructions to see how much to give. A little and often is better than a lot in one go.
