  • Potato growing from one left in ground

I tried growing potatoes last year as a lockdown project but wasn't very successful. I have noticed I have some top growth in the area I used last year. I assime this is from one potato I accidently left in the ground last year. Will this produce any worthwhile potatoes?

I grew them in potato bags one yr. Left the compost in after harvesting the potatoes . Mustv been teeny tiny ones left on the roots. Ended up harvesting potatoes again following year
    Northern England.

It will probably produce a usable crop, especially if you give it some fertiliser.
The reason it's usually recommended to start with fresh seed potatoes every year is because diseases can potentially build up year on year with potatoes you save yourself, but it's unlikely to be a problem just in the first year after originally buying the seed potatoes.

Think of it as a bonus crop, so its worth leaving it to grow unless you need the space.
        Location....East Midlands.

It wasn't a seed potato, only a supermarket potatoes that had sprouted, so for something to do in lockdown I planted them. Not particulary good results but an experiment.

Just give it a good handful of general feed, the sort you would add to the soil at planting time. Growmore, blood, fish & bone, or pelleted poultry manure are the most common ones.
If you don't already have some then I wouldn't bother, though. It wouldn't be worth the extra expense of buying some just for a few more potatoes.

Thanks. I have some growmore I can use.
