  • Asparagus in bins

Hi. I know there are some experienced pot growing Gardner's on here so would appreciate some help.
We planted 2 year crowns about 4 or 5 years ago in a dedicated raised bed. For various reasons the bed got choked with a huge amount of perennial weeds - nettles raspberry and bindweed mainly and ants.
I have cleared the bed and have dug up what has survived of the crowns and have about 4 that look viable.
I won't put them back in the bed because it needs annual stuff so I can keep on top of the weed problem although the soil is very good and deep - the weeds thrived!
    What is your opinion please,?
Is it worth putting the crowns in dustbins?
I have 2 redundant ones already and could get a couple more if it is worth doing?

It would seem this is not the ideal time to be moving/planting crowns and I have never heard of it being grown in a pot, maybe you could try it and report back how you get on, sounds like you have little to lose.

I've tried a couple of crowns in containers, but they're not doing much (one dead, one barely alive). The survivor will be moved to a bed later in the year, to join his 2 friends there (planted at the same time, but doing much better).

Not an ideal time to move them, but you need to do something with them!

I can’t see a problem planting them in a dustbin on a temporary basis but they need loads of water.

Have a look at the root system on this plant( scroll down a bit)

Looking at that I’d say they wouldn t do well long term in a pot

I'm not saying you couldn't make it work using supplementary feed etc. but growing in a dustbin would deny the plant access to micorrhizal fungi which play their part in bringing nutrients and minerals to the extensive root structure of a perennial food crop.
