  • Thinning rasps

Last year I thinned out my autumn raso beds during the summer to remove some of the thinner canes. I found this helped to give a better crop as the rest had more space and I guess air. Can’t remember at what point I did that but thinking I should do it again this year as it is looking rammed. Anyone else to do this ? If so when?

I haven't thinned mine before, they just seem to spread out sideways rather than get crowded, do you know what variety they are?

I do it whenever, but I only target the weedy canes. Their obvious even when they are only a few inches tall, so it's easy enough to spot them and pull them out.

They are called sugana. I grow them as autumn although they are sometimes described as double fruiting. Left along the bed gets rammed and I need to cut them hard back like autumn rasps as they get so tall I can’t get to the fruit.
