Some of my green tomatoes have started to split at the top, though it doesnt appear the skin has broken yet - should I pick these straight away and will they ripen ?

As you’ve said the skin hasn’t broken,leave them longer,when you see a hint of colour they can be picked & ripen indoors on the windowsill. A lot of rain can cause tomatoes to take up too much water & split.
