  • Seaweed Mulch

Yesterday I collected two big bin bags full of seaweed, and I was wondering if it would be okay to use as a mulch for annual crops? Specifically I was thinking beans and tomatoes.

Don't see why it couldn't be used for mulch. We dry it (for storage) and make liquid feed for toms, aubs and peppers. A little goes a long way. Did read that red seaweed shouldn't be used as it accumulates cadmium.

My dad improved his garden soil over many years by adding seaweed as he lived near the beach. He dug it into trenches eg when planting potatoes, and also used it as a mulch.
Mostly flowers, some fruit and veg, at the seaside in Edinburgh.

Endorse the Bones' comments about little goes a long way.

It can get a bit rank and slimy if you spread it too thickly. We are able to drive right onto the beach so are tempted to load up too much.
        Asparagus likes seaweed. Slugs don't.
I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."
