  • Is this dreaded White Rot??

Hello all. First post from me, so pleased to meet you all

I've been growing veg for quite a while, but had a break and moved my plot to make way for a wildflower patch.... Never had any problems with growing garlic, onions, leeks and shallots. This year my garlic has been badly afflicted (50%) by something I suspect might be White Rot. It's also just started getting tucked into the onions as well...

Have uploaded a couple of pics and would welcome any possible diagnosis from members.

    Thanks for taking a look.

    Neil

With onion white rot you'll typically see some white mouldy fluff, starting where the roots meet the bulb (and then expanding up the bulb). I might be missing it, but couldn't see it on your pictures.
We've been having a rather wet couple of months, could it be general issues with too much water?

It looks like the skin is rotting off to leave bare cloves.

The garlic looks perfectly fine to me. Am I missing something?

As for the onion, it definitely has a rot of some sort, but I don't think it's white rot. It lacks the distinctive dense white mould. It looks like the rot which affects some of my onions each year (around 10%), which I believe may be this:

I'm only mildly affected, likely because it's not really warm enough to strike hard in this country. My plot is in full sun for 90% of the day, though, so the soil does actually get pretty warm on sunny days.

Onions are still edible if caught soon enough (you may need to trim a little from the base end), but will not keep so need refrigerating and using up as soon as possible.

Thank you for your responses. Feel a bit better now! At least I can hopefully get back to good garlic when we have a better growing season.
