Asparagus?

I’ve pulled out the strawberries so now have an empty bed about 4x6, wondering about possibility of planting asparagus?

has anyone done this, is it easy to grow? Is it worth it? Any thoughts?

We've got a couple of asparagus beds. Takes a few years to establish but if you like asparagus and can afford the space to my mind it's worth it. Our beds are approx 5m x 1m.
Of the two types we grow the Mondeo crops well but the Purple Pacific (in the adjacent bed) is next to useless and now after 6 years will be pushed out in favour of more Mondeo.

Seems to take a few years of patience and resistance to temptation to harvest prematurely. We have had some in for three years now and can chance a meal or two but it's nowhere like the pictures you see of commercial crops thick with emerging spears (yet)

We feed, weed and mulch just like you're supposed to so maybe next year.

I’ve seen that you can buy 3 year old crowns, would that be an idea? I do love asparagus, but not sure if it’s a good idea, or a waste of time and space.

our allotments are surrounded by tall trees and are not the easiest to maintain, and have lots if wildlife, rats, mice, fox, pigeon, squirrels etc

Asparagus isn't really bothered by vertebrate pests.
The main pests it is troubled by are asparagus beetles (and their larvae) and slugs and snails.

When I grew asparagus back in the uk , I used to catch crop lettuce along the sides of the ridges.
The asparagus roots grow very deep and the lettuce didn’t interfere with the spears.
