  • Growing shallots from seed (not sets)

The shallots I grew from sets this year have done well and I'm now thinking about next year's crop. I've chosen which of this year's sets to save for planting out but I've been browsing online and have just discovered a couple of varieties that it's possible to grow from seed. The ones I'm looking at are a shallot/onion hybrid: Zebrune and Simiane. Apparently, when they grow each seed produces something that looks like a large banana shallot (not a typical shallot cluster). As my onions from seed did better than my onions from sets this year, I'm thinking of trying out some shallots from seed. I'd be interested if anyone has grown these varieties (or other varieties of shallots) from seed and what the results were. Did they grow as well as sets do? Do they taste good or are there better varieties of shallots to grow from seed?

I grew zebrunne this year and had a fantastic crop I've always struggled growing onions from seed but these seem easier and look really good but haven't tasted yet

Apparently red Florence which are similar are good as well

Thanks, cwmmawr. It's good to know it's worth trying them from seed. I'll now look into buying shallot seeds in preparation for next year.
