  • Weird courgette

I planted two courgette plants in a grow bag, one green and one yellow.
As expected the green produced green courgettes and the yellow produced yellow ones.
After a while the yellow plant started producing mottled yellow/green courgettes. The green one was OK.
    Any idea what's going on?
Are the mottled ones safe to eat.
I recently saw an article about rouge courgette plants producing inedible fruit.
    Any comments please.
    Thanks Jimmy

I don't know enough about growing courgettes to know if your mottled yellow/green ones are OK or not, but your post did remind me of something on courgette poisoning that I read recently. You might want to read this article on courgette mutations and cross-pollination as sometimes they can produce bitter fruits which can be toxic and cause stomach upsets: https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=676

I've previously had this with a yellow variety (Atena I think), and it seemed to be weather related. Cool and rainy weather resulted in courgettes that were more green than yellow.
In that case they were all still perfectly edible.

My guess would be that if it smells bitter then it’s NOT OK to eat.
With cucumbers you can ‘soap’ cut ends together to help remove the bitterness , but I’ve no idea if that would be worth looking into for a courgette?

Of course….if in doubt , don’t eat it

Strangely , now you mention it , my yellow climbing french beans have green splodges on them too. Very strange.

I wouldn't worry about toxic courgettes. The toxic compound is very bitter, so you can't miss it. Just taste a tiny bit raw before you cook with it. If it tastes fine, it's safe to eat.

            OK thanks.
Given I have a glut of courgettes I binned the suspect ones.
