I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."

Its trying to get that balance between planting too early and having soft growth going into winter and having less growth for hardiness. I have staggered my planting of three different types of Autumn onion set in the hope I will get at least one of the plantings right. I still have loads of sets to plant yet but have in the past planted them right up to the new year and still had success.
My earliest planted Autumn Champion are now 6 inches tall and I worry for them being too soft when the really bad weather arrives!
My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

    Diversify & prosper

Snadger - do report your results. Would be interesting.

We are three or four hundred miles south of you so our autumn started onions usually survive OK (unless I hoe them carelessly)
